Volos is a major port city situated in the center of Greece. The town boasts about its ancient heritage. The first two prehistoric villages in Greece were discovered here. It’s also the birthplace of Jason leader of the Argonauts. Moreover the Argonauts set sail from here in quest for the Golden Fleece.

Despite its rich ancient history the modern city of Volos had to be rebuilt after two horrendous earthquakes back in the 1950s. The new city of Volos, with a buzzing University, a busy commercial and tourist port, a nearby airport and proximity to the main highway connecting Athens to Thessaloniki, is a national and international gateway.

Volos prides itself about its pedestrian city center. Efforts have been made to introduce cycling in the city. However this project remains on a small level with plans for further development in the near future.
Bus transportation enjoys a growing popularity with a steady increase of 6 per cent (6%) of passengers in the past two years.
The local bus company (Astiko KTEL Volou) aims to increase this number by investing in the education of the younger generation and engaged with local partners. A pilot project under the umbrella of European Mobility Week aimed to educated children about the benefits of public transportation. Children from local primary schools had the opportunity to experience bus transportation as part of their play. As well as learn about the benefits of public transportation for the environment, they were also introduced to safety procedures. The project received great attention local and nationally and is about to resume with aim to educate as many children as possible.
